Why Therapist Websites Don't Convert

Most therapist websites are built by therapists or by general agencies who don't understand the therapeutic context. The result is a predictable set of conversion-killers — fixable, but only if you know what to look for.

Most therapist websites are built by therapists themselves or by general agencies who don't understand the therapeutic context. The result is a predictable set of conversion-killers — fixable, but only if you know what to look for.

The headline reads like an internal description

"Integrative psychotherapist offering a range of evidence-based therapies." The visitor doesn't know what to do with that. The headline should answer "do you help with what I'm carrying, in a way I can understand?" — in plain English.

Modalities listed without context

"CBT, EMDR, person-centred, schema therapy, IFS, somatic." Most visitors don't know what any of those mean. List them, but explain them in one sentence each, in language that connects to outcomes the client cares about.

The "About" page is paragraphs of training history

Visitors care about: what kind of person are you, what kind of clients do you usually work with, what tends to happen in a session. Training history matters but should sit lower on the page. Lead with humanity; back it up with credentials.

The contact form asks too much

Name, email, phone, postcode, presenting issue, history of therapy, modality preference, insurance details. Each question added to the public form costs enquiries. Keep it to name, email, and one optional sentence. The deeper intake is for after the conversation has started.

Mobile feels like an afterthought

Most therapy searches happen on phones. A site that's beautiful on desktop but cramped on mobile loses the majority of visitors. Test your own site on a phone, on 4G, and notice every moment of friction.

No visible response-time commitment

An anxious visitor wonders "have they received it? when will I hear back?" A simple "we typically reply within one working day" line below the form transforms how the act of enquiring feels. Costs nothing to add. Measurably lifts conversions.

The structural reasons are explored in our pillar: why most business websites don't generate enquiries.
