Local SEO For Therapists
Most therapists rely on referrals and directory listings. The few who layer in proper local SEO end up with consistent enquiries from people actively searching — usually higher-intent than referrals and far more reliable.

Search intent in therapy is unusually clear
"trauma therapist Canterbury", "EMDR Maidstone", "couples counselling Tunbridge Wells" — local therapy searches are specific, urgent, and high-intent. The therapist who appears for them gets a meaningful share of new clients in their area. The one who doesn't is invisible to that demand.
Specialisation pages, not a generic services list
A single page listing "I offer CBT, EMDR, person-centred, integrative therapy" cannot rank for any of those modalities. A dedicated page per modality + location ("EMDR therapy in Canterbury") can. The unglamorous truth: rankings reward dedicated pages over comprehensive ones.
Google Business Profile is essential here
Therapy is one of the categories Google leans on heavily for the local map pack. A complete profile — correct primary category ("Psychotherapist"), full description, hours, services, photographs — is the difference between appearing in the top 3 map results or being invisible. Most therapist GBPs are barely set up.

Reviews — handled sensitively
Asking for therapy reviews is more delicate than asking for plumbing reviews. The right framing is "if your therapy work has reached a natural conclusion and you'd be willing to share a few words about your experience, no pressure at all" — and only ever to clients you've explicitly discussed it with first. A handful of considered reviews vastly outperforms none.
Directories are a complement, not a strategy
Counselling Directory, Psychology Today, BACP find-a-therapist — all worth being on. None replace owning your own visibility. The therapists who build sustainable practices treat directories as one channel and their own SEO as the foundation.
Content that draws the right people in
"What to expect from your first therapy session", "signs you might benefit from therapy", "the difference between a counsellor and a psychotherapist". These articles attract pre-decision searchers who become clients months later. Pillar reading: how local SEO helps businesses get more customers.
