Common Local SEO Mistakes Small Businesses Make

Most small businesses don't fail at local SEO because of bad strategy. They fail because of a small number of unforced errors repeated quietly for years. Here are the ones we see most often — and exactly how to fix each.

Most small businesses don't fail at local SEO because of bad strategy. They fail because of a small number of unforced errors repeated quietly for years. Each one is fixable in an afternoon. Together, they're the difference between page-one rankings and invisibility.

1. Inconsistent name, address, phone (NAP)

Different formats across different listings — "01227 123456" vs "+44 1227 123456" vs "1227-123-456". Google reads inconsistency as confusion and discounts the listings accordingly. Standardise everything to one canonical format.

2. Wrong primary GBP category

A "therapist" set to category "Counselor" instead of "Psychotherapist" loses ranking for searches that match the more specific term. Choose the most specific accurate category — and add secondary categories where relevant.

3. No location pages

The single biggest under-investment in small-business SEO. A homepage cannot rank for "therapist Canterbury", "therapist Maidstone", and "therapist Tunbridge Wells" simultaneously. Each needs its own dedicated page.

4. Reviews on autopilot

Asking once and never again. The businesses that win local search are systematically asking every happy customer for a review at the moment they're happiest. One a week, every week, indefinitely.

5. No replies to reviews

A profile with 80 unanswered reviews looks abandoned to both Google and prospective customers. Reply to every review within 48 hours. It's a tiny effort and a real ranking signal.

6. No internal links between local pages

Service pages don't link to location pages. Location pages don't link to each other. The site looks like a collection of orphan pages rather than a coherent local authority. Internal linking turns separate pages into a structured cluster.

7. Slow mobile experience

Bloated themes, oversized images, unused plugins. The mobile experience is what Google ranks. A 6-second mobile load is a ranking and conversion disaster simultaneously.

8. No schema markup

LocalBusiness schema, Service schema, Review schema, FAQ schema. Most small business sites have none. Schema is one of the easiest visible-ranking levers — but only for businesses that bother.

9. Ignoring Google Posts

The Updates tab on GBP. Most businesses haven't posted in over a year. A weekly post — services, content, offers — keeps the listing fresh and signals activity to Google.

10. Stopping at month three

Local SEO compounds. The biggest mistake is stopping before the compounding kicks in. The businesses that commit for 12 months almost always overtake those that stopped at three. For the broader picture, see how local SEO helps businesses get more customers.
