Why Marketing Feels Hard For Small Businesses

It's not that marketing is genuinely hard. It's that small business owners are usually being asked to be five different specialists at once, with no infrastructure and no time. Knowing which two things to focus on changes everything.

It's not that marketing is genuinely hard. It's that small business owners are usually being asked to be five different specialists at once, with no infrastructure and no time. Knowing which two things to focus on changes everything.

The expertise sprawl

SEO. Content. Social. Paid ads. Email. PR. Branding. Conversion optimisation. Analytics. The marketing world has fragmented into so many specialisms that no single person — let alone a small business owner — can master all of them. The result is the constant feeling that you're behind on something.

The wrong question

"What should I be doing?" is the trap. Lists of 47 marketing tactics produce overwhelm and no execution. The right question is "what are the 2 things that, if done consistently for 12 months, would move my business furthest?" — and then ignore everything else.

What usually wins (for most local service businesses)

Tactic 1: Local SEO + content. Tactic 2: Reputation + reviews. That's it. Done well over 12-18 months, this combination outperforms almost any other mix for local businesses under £2m revenue. Adding more tactics rarely accelerates growth; usually it dilutes execution.

Why owners over-complicate

Marketing content online is mostly written for venture-backed startups, large e-commerce, or specialist agencies. Almost none of it is written for "the local plumber with five employees." The implicit message is "you should do everything we do" — which is wildly inappropriate for the constraints small businesses actually face.

The relief of saying no

You don't need to be on TikTok. You don't need a podcast. You don't need a newsletter strategy. You don't need to run paid social. Most of these channels won't move the needle for a local service business — and the time spent on them comes directly out of the time available for the things that would.

The actual permission

Pick two channels that fit your business. Run them well for 12 months. Ignore the rest entirely. By month 18, the business is in a position to layer on a third if it's still useful. For the broader picture on what these channels do structurally, see the real reason most businesses struggle to grow online.
